14 DEAD-KISUMU-KERICHO HIGHWAY

Fourteen people died Sunday morning following a grisly accident involving a Nissan matatu and a lorry at the black spot Kaitui area along the Kericho-Kisumu highway.

All the twelve who died were aboard the Nisan belonging to Molo Line.

They were ten passengers, including a young child and the driver.

Kericho deputy OCPD Augustine Nthumbi said the other two who died were a boy aged 15 years and his sister aged 20 who were looking after cattle by the roadside.

The accident which occurred at around 10.00 AM involved a lorry and a Nissan.

The lorry was ferrying table salt to Kisumu.

Eyewitnesses said the lorry seemed to have lost its breaks and it suddenly knocked the oncoming Nissan matatu head on and dragged it about twenty metres off the road.

The impact left the matatu a shell, squeezing the passengers and tearing them beyond recognition.

The bodies were taken to Kericho district hospital.

The lorry driver and the loader escaped unhurt while a passenger who was aboard the lorry received minor injuries and is admitted at the Kericho nursing home.

Kaitui area is a black spot where many accidents occur frequently.
