Raila says judiciary appointments 'unconstitutional'

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has described the judiciary appointments made by President Kibaki on Friday as 'unconstitutional'

The PM said he was "shocked and dismayed' at the appointments which the President had proceeded to make without adhering to the principles of the constitution, adding that the appointments would be blocked using the appropriate constitutional means
Mr Odinga said his office had agreed with the Office of the President to hold consultations after the African Union meeting in Addis Ababa, but shockingly the appointments were made while he was away.
The PM jetted into the country from Ethiopia at 1:15pm on Saturday, heading straight into a closed-door meeting with ODM party allies at the airport.
The PM who was accompanied by Public Service minister Dalmas Otieno was received by Cabinet ministers James Orengo and Mohammed Elmi and permanent secretary Mohammed Isahakia at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Earlier, Mr Odinga while still in Ethiopia at the ongoing African Union summit, denied he was consulted over Judiciary appointments made by President Kibaki on Friday.
Lands Minister James Orengo addressed a press conference in Nairobi soon after the appointments, protesting the nomination of the candidates saying Mr Odinga had not been consulted.
He said the PM had advised that the release of the names be delayed awaiting further deliberations by the two coalition leaders after returning home from the AU summit in Addis Ababa.
