NAIROBI, Kenya, May 30 - Police in Nairobi on Sunday shot and killed eight suspected gangsters said to be notorious carjackers wanted for a series of robbery incidents.

The gunmen armed with two pistols and a home-made gun were riding in two saloon cars which police said had been used to carjack motorists in various parts of the city on Saturday and Sunday night.

“It is a notorious group which was involved in armed crime for the whole of Saturday night; our officers had been trailing them for sometime before they were cornered,” Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi said.

“They sped off while shooting at our officers when they were ordered to stop on Waiyaki Way, that is when they were pursued and intercepted. They were all gunned down during the fierce shootout,” Mr Kibuchi told Capital News.

The incident occurred at about 11 pm on Sunday night.

“Prior to the exchange of fire with our officers, the gangsters had robbed motorists in Kikuyu area,” the police chief added.

Police recovered two pistols—a Glock and a Berreta—as well as a home made gun from the slain men.

“We are also detaining two saloon cars they were found with at the time because we highly suspect these are stolen vehicles,” Mr Kibuchi added.

Senior officers who spoke to Capital News said they hoped the number of carjackings in Nairobi would come down drastically “because this group was responsible for most of the incidents.

“We will be at peace, at least for now. This group of eight was troublesome, it had given us sleepless nights,” one senior officer said.

On average, at least two carjacking incidents are reported in Nairobi but the number goes up to five or six on Thursday’s Friday’s, Saturday’s and public holidays.

Mr Kibuchi told Capital News they had stepped up the war on crime in Nairobi.

“We have enough patrols now, this will help reduce the number of carjacking in the city. We however, require the help of the public to participate in community policing,” he said.
